Autumn at Westonbirt Arboretum

If you are looking for a day visit away from the hustle and bustle of Bath City centre then look no further than Westonbirt Arboretum.

Located near the historic market town of Tetbury in Gloucestershire, about a 35 minute drive from The Bird, Bath, Westonbirt is perhaps the most important and widely known arboretum in the United Kingdom.

This time of year as you wonder through the mix of trees around the Old Arboretum, following the autumn trail which is approximately 1 mile, your eyes are drawn to the wonderful colours. The Old Arboretum is a beautifully designed landscape offering stunning vistas, stately avenues, and a host of rare and exotic trees from across the globe dating back to the 1850s.  The Acer Glade which is breath-taking with the golds, burnt orange and red leaves, is definitely not to be missed!

Silk Wood is a very different experience, with a well signposted trail that is approximately 2 miles long. Although it also contains many exotic plantings, at its heart is a traditional working woodland, dating back to the 13th century. Walk through Cherry Glade, the Japanese Maple Collection and along Broad Drive to see the wonderful Oak Collection. There is also a 2000 year-old lime that warrants a visit!

After all that walking there is plenty of choice for refreshments at the café or in the lovely restaurant, a nice warming hot chocolate is highly recommended on a fresh autumnal day!
